Counseling is a safe place to grow. From time to time, individuals, couples, and families hurt for many different reasons. Counseling is a safe place to heal hurts, learn to get your needs met, and learn to meet the needs of others. If you are married and have lost the emotional bond you once shared or are dealing with the effects of an extramarital sexual affair, counseling is a critical step toward healing and strengthening the relationship.
Just like married couples, non-married couples who cohabitate can lose their emotional bond or be scarred by an affair, and counseling can help. Engaged couples can benefit from pre-marital preparation to get the marriage started in a positive way. It is not uncommon for individuals to have difficulties living life. Some difficulties may be out of their control and some may be from poor choices.
Unsafe places may have been in family origin, deep hurt from sexual abuse, unresolved anger from betrayal, and/or broken relationships from the past to name just a few places of hurt.

If you are married and have lost the emotional closeness and positive emotional bonding you once shared, then Emotional Focused Therapy (EFT) may be the very tool you need in your marital relationship tool box.
Pain can come from sexual betrayal; arguments over parenting; money; and/or not being heard, validated, or nurtured by your spouse.
Also, the marital dance can be difficult when communication skills are poor, and seeking counseling can be the first step in restoring the attachment and positive emotional bonding you seek to thrive in the marital dance.

In our culture, a high percentage of couples choose to live together before marriage.
Studies show that over 60% of couples who live together before marriage have a higher divorce rate than couples that don't.
However, many still chose to cohabitate to see "if we are compatible."
I find many of these couples do love each other but still need the same EFT skills to thrive.
They may even go on to marry once they learn how to nurture each other.
David L. Jamison is a licensed therapist with specialized training in EFT.
