I have been a psychotherapist in private practice for more than 14 years, but I began my professional life as a cultural anthropologist, and that training and perspective are resources I apply continually in my work as a counselor.
The broader context of culture and society affects each and every one of us, regardless of our ethnic, religious, or political affiliations, through our work, our schools, our families, our neighborhoods, and the larger communities where we live.
Too often the impacts of culture and society are stressful, and it is challenging to live healthy lives that suit our individual natures and family circumstances.
There are many schools of thought and many techniques for shaping the counseling process, but it is fundamentally a relationship between client and therapist, with the client's growth and healing as its purpose.
In my work with clients, you are the authority in your own life.
My role is to help you figure out what is working in your life, what is not working, what can change, and how to make change.
But I recognize that you are the one who must shape your life through your decisions.
I am privileged to know you, but the choices are yours.

It can interfere with making friends, and can inhibit you from speaking up in a group or feeling comfortable at a party.
In counseling, the goals for treating social anxiety are to develop more confidence in yourself and reduce concern about other people's judgment so that you can choose how you want to engage with other people and socialize in a way that is comfortable for you.
