I see counseling as being a journey that is bigger than what happens in an office. I see the office as a place to identify destinations, identify the things needed to complete the journey, and to do training that will prepare us for long hikes and difficult terrain. The metaphorical destinations are the paths and directions that we choose. Life has it demands of us and we have our own endeavors and passions.
A combination of life and our choices create anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, addiction, and a multitude of problems or how I prefer to refer to them "growing opportunities". Changing our thinking and reframing our thoughts are the soil that allows growth. Taking actions, facing fears, and experiencing unpleasant emotions is the transformation process similar to a caterpillar turning into a butterfly.
Making decisions that align with are values, taking care of ourselves, and knowing our self worth is like the care or compassion given to a garden by the gardener such as watering it and removing weeds that prevent growth.

I am trained in EMDR therapy, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing.
Here is a metaphor I like to use to explain trauma.
Imagine that a tree falls in a river and is stuck, the tree is going to change the path of the water and create turbulence.
A second tree falls and there is another change in the waters path with more turbulence, then a third, and a fourth.
When enough trees fall a dam is created and there is no longer a path for the water to travel.
Metaphorically speaking the part of of us that experienced the trauma is disconnected from our rational or wise mind.
