Relief is a Counseling and Art Therapy practice located just north of Philadelphia in Jenkintown, PA. A combination art studio and cozy talk space, it is designed as a place for connection, creativity, exploration, discovery and healing. Although we use many forms of creative expression in our practice at Relief, I am a printmaker at heart. I see "relief" as one of the rewards of therapy.
As a printmaker, I know "relief" is a process wherein we get to decide what aids us in creating our image, and what does not. We remove negative and leave positive, knowing that both are essential to our experience of the whole. These elements allow tight, frazzled and inflexible systems to naturally loosen, calm, and grow. Whatever brings you here, please enjoy looking around and learning about Art Therapy and my practice.
This site is designed as a starting point on the next chapter of your journey.

Services
My first career was as a sign language interpreter.
I completed my undergrad work in psychology and studio art in 2004, as an adult non-traditional student.
I earned a clinical degree in Creative Art Therapy in 2006.
I've been helping people find their way since 2006, and I've been in private practice since 2011.
I lost my mother to cancer in 1986.
This event was life-changing and pointed me in the direction of becoming knowledgeable and skilled in helping manage the deep and damaging psychological and relational effects of chronic and life-threatening illness as well as loss.

You might find yourself here pondering these things because your life, as lives tend to do, took an unexpected turn.
An ongoing illness.
An aging relative.
A death.
A separation.
A loss.
It may have happened recently or in the distant past, or perhaps it's still going on.
It might be obvious or subtle.
An event, a series of happenings, or a way of being.
You might not even consider it "so bad" and know people who have it "much worse."
You're not really the type of person who does a lot for yourself.

When I was a child, I was ill for a time that required about 4 weeks of recuperation and bed rest.
By about the 4th day, tired of TV and bored out of my skull, my mother brought me a stack of magazines, a bunch of cardboard, and a bottle of Elmer's glue.
I spent the remainder of the time cutting, pasting, and producing dozens and dozens of collages.
Each was a piece I was proud of, each helped me not only pass the time but engaged my creativity and ability to express myself in spite of my circumstance.

As a client, you can expect consistent and compassionate care at Relief.
The space is designed as a container to house the experience of being in a relationship whose purpose is the collaborative effort to greet the many aspects of your internal experience with curiosity and respect.
Through it we can learn, adjust, cope, and create, validate, witness and experience your life, free from the pressures of judgement and shame.

Then, something happens that expands our frame abruptly- maybe adds 6 inches of unknown canvas to the right.
Unfamiliar, even scary territory.
We may have heard about such things happening- in books, on TV, to a friend or a friend's friend.
But not to us.
And now this new territory, this new part of our picture exists that challenges all our strengths, supports and resources with its uncertainties.
Cancer is a frame expander.
However a cancer diagnosis has arrived in your life- be it your own, your loved one's, or your patient's- there is some major adjusting everyone must do to accommodate its presence.
