Not all methods of couples counseling are created equal.
Mark has trained extensively through the Gottman Institute, created by Drs.
John and Julie Gottman see www.
Gottman.com.
The Gottman Method of couples therapy is unique in several respects.
First, it has over forty years of solid, empirical research behind it.
Too much couples therapy today is theory.
Just because something makes sense or sounds true doesn't mean it works.
The Gottmans have studied thousands of couples.
They have discovered what builds love (and what destroys it).
Mark has trained extensively through the International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT).
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) originated around 35 years ago with Dr. Sue Johnson (see the video below).
EFT addresses the vital role that emotions play in our well-being, especially in relationships, such as marriage.
EFT is based on Attachment Theory, which says that all humans have a hard-wired, innate need to connect, to bond with someone (or ones) on whom we can depend for affection, support, security and love.
John Gottman is famous for his research and his ability to predict with great accuracy (over 90 percent) whether couples will eventually divorce after observing them for just a few minutes.
But Gottman's greatest contribution is not in predicting which couples will divorce; his research also reveals what makes relationships last.
The Seven Principles Program comes from that research.
This program equips couples with skills and insights that strengthen their friendship, help them to manage conflict and create deep, shared meaning together.
Prepare-Enrich is a relationship enhancing program for individual couples or groups of any size.
It is based on a series of inventories and assessments tailored to each particular couple's characteristics.
P/E has a solid foundation of research and over 3 million couples have taken the online inventory.
In addition to the assessment, P/E provides exercises and insights that help couples improve communication and conflict management and to accommodate their differences.
It is an excellent tool for couples preparing for marriage, but married couples love it too.
I have been an ordained minister since 1983 and have pastored churches in Virginia and North Carolina.
In the 1990's, I transitioned to the counseling field and been a licensed professional counselor since 2001.
I maintained a private counseling practice in Virginia until my wife, Debbie and I moved to Florida in 2017, where I started my current practice in the little town of Inverness.
I am now licensed in Virginia (LPC) and Florida (LMHC).
So, I am a preacher who counsels or a counselor who preaches.
