Capital Area Counseling Services has been providing services since 1968. We are accredited by the State of South Dakota as a mental health, addiction treatment and child welfare agency. We serve youth, families, adults and seniors. All of our clinical staff is certified, licensed or are in the process of completing their professional credentials. Less experienced staff receive guidance regularly from their clinical supervisor.

Capital Area Counseling Service will not deny services due to inability to pay. Financial assistance is available based on income and family size.
Services
Client engagement, easy access to services, positive clinical outcomes and value-based services are paramount to providing the most effective services to our consumers.
Services are provided utilizing a system of care framework that is comprehensive, strength-based, client-centered, family-focused and co-occurring capable.
Most services use Integrated Clinical Teams (ICTs).
These teams are comprised of clinicians from Counseling, Social Work, Addictions, Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Nursing.
They collaborate to ensure the necessary service(s) are provided to meet the client's identified needs.
Mental health services that are comprehensive, strength-based, client-centered, family-focused, community-based, and co-occurring capable provided to children and youth diagnosed with a serious emotional disturbance and their families.
All services are delivered within an integrated system of care and interagency cooperation is an integral part of the family based services.
Family based clinicians partner with families so that all services are developed cooperatively and are coordinated.
The coordinated team shares responsibility, expertise, and mutual support while designing creative services that meet an individual's strengths and needs across home and community.
The Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program is a comprehensive, person-centered, recovery focused integrated system which provides individual treatment, rehabilitation, and support services to identified clients with serious mental illness also including those with co-occurring conditions.
Psychiatric rehabilitation promotes recovery, full community integration and improved quality of life for persons who have been diagnosed with any mental health condition that seriously impairs their ability to lead meaningful lives.
Therapeutic Foster Care is a family foster home based treatment program.
TFC parents provide nurturing basic day-to-day care for a foster child in a safe environment, but treatment foster parents are also expected to provide extra time and effort to help a child meet their emotional and behavioral needs.
The TFC clinical specialist and treatment parents partner with a treatment team including: the child's therapist, school, medical providers, guardian agency and any others providing services to that child.
DBT includes four behavioral skill modules, with two acceptance-oriented skills (mindfulness and distress tolerance) and two change-oriented skills (emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness).
Interpersonal Effectiveness: how to ask for what you want and say no while maintaining self-respect and relationships with others.
Emotion Regulation: how to decrease vulnerability to painful emotions and change emotions that you want to change.
