Services
There is a story that many people experience at some point during their life: Walking along the path of life, feeling different, perhaps not quite "right" or sometimes a bit "off."
You know that something is wrong, you just don't know what to do about it.
One day, along comes another person who points to the sky, perhaps to a star that you haven't seen in quite that way before.
Suddenly, because the star is pointed out, together you see what you yourself have never before seen quite so clearly - or perhaps have never even seen at all.
Therapy is a large commitment of time, money and energy and so you should choose your therapist carefully.
How can you tell if the therapist you are considering is excellent, average or virtually ineffective?
Since therapy is collaborative process, I strongly believe you should be comfortable, encouraged and optimistic with the therapist you choose.
Licensing is required by local or state governments in order for a professional to practice legally within their jurisdiction.
Typically, licensure ensures the minimum qualifications necessary to practice, including education, supervised experience and length of time in practice.
Some anxiety is normal, useful and necessary: we worry about doing well on an exam, and so we study harder.
We feel anxious about an important presentation, and so we set aside more time to practice.
That kind of anxiety is helpful and appropriate.
But when anxious feelings barge in the door and stay there - you're probably dealing with an anxiety disorder.
That's when it's time to get help.
The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that anxiety disorders affect about 18 percent of American adults and about 13 percent of children and adolescents in a given year - making these conditions the most common of all mental health disorders.
How do you tell the difference between depression and just being in a bad mood?
Depression is not just a case of the blues that lasts a few days, or transient feelings of sadness or loss about a difficult situation.
These are predictable responses to ordinary life events.
Depression is more.
Depression is a serious illness that makes it difficult to deal with daily life; it interferes with normal functioning.
It is painful for the person experiencing it - and also for those who care about that person.
Being in relationship with another is simultaneously one of the most satisfying aspects of life and also one of life's greatest challenges.
We become attracted to another, fall in love, and over time, become partners.
The feeling of being in love imparts a very special quality to life: life feels special, magical or even like a fairy tale.
Because these "good" feelings are so intense, when conflict does arise, it is particularly painful to us.
We can become defensive: we may attack or we may withdraw.
