Website
The vision of the MDCGC is to ensure the quality of genetic health care and to promote the field of genetic counseling in Maryland and the District of Columbia (hereafter referred to as DC). As the demand for genetic testing within the medical field continues to grow, so does the field of genetic counseling. More than ever, genetic counselors are playing a crucial role in patient care and understanding across various specialties.

During an appointment, the genetic counselor may take a detailed family history to better understand your risk for an inherited condition. Additionally, the genetic counselor may discuss your options for genetic testing and/or the results of your genetic test. Genetic counselors typically receive bachelor's degress in biology, social science, or a related field prior to completing specialized training.

Master's degrees in genetic counseling programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC). Certification through the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) assures that a genetic counselor has proven competency in her or his field or practice.
Services
Prior to the establishment of the MDCGC in 2018, there was not a formal genetic counseling organization in either Washington D.C. or Maryland.
The group was created to serve a network for genetic counselors in the area as well as to provide an organized means to tackle professional issues within the field.
We are so excited to announce that there is officially a law for the licensure of genetic counselors in Maryland!
You can read the full text of the law here.
Now that the law has been passed, the law is in the rule-making stage.
There are still some details that must be worked out before the process of applying for and granting licensure for genetic counselors begins.
We will update our community with more information as it becomes available.
If you have questions about the state licensure law, check out the recording from our webinar or the frequently asked questions below.
