Heartfocus Counseling
I specialize in individual counseling for trauma and brain injury, depression and anxiety, and particularly enjoy working with highly sensitive people. I also offer counseling for couples. Somatic counseling psychotherapy connects your body with your mind, using body sensation, 5 senses, movement in addition to your emotions and thoughts. I help adults and couples solve problems of living, verbally and non-verbally.

My approach works especially well with victims of emotional and/or physical trauma, couples'communication, kinesthetic learners, and people with cognitive challenges eg. Brain injury and multiple sclerosis. Located in Arvada, Colorado (Denver). Cathy was one of the persons instrumental in helping get myself back together mentally after my partner did everything hurtful that could be done.

I was very comfortable talking with Cathy, she is caring, kind, understanding and knowledgeable, but is also rooted in the real world. I am doing really well right now! The best, in fact, I've been doing in years.

Additionally, Cathy provides counseling for relationship issues, self-confidence issues, and life transitions.
Somatic Therapy - Somatic or Body Oriented Psychotherapy, encourages the "communication" of experience between the mind and the body, allowing greater understanding of the issues and enabling sustainable movement towards greater health and wellbeing.
Sensorimotor Psychotherapy - Sensorimotor Psychotherapy is a body-oriented talking therapy that integrates verbal techniques with body-centered interventions in the treatment of trauma, attachment, and developmental issues.
According to Dr. Francine Shapiro (inventor of EMDR), there are 2 research-verified theories on why EMDR works.
The first is that EMDR overloads our brain's working memory so it "lets go" of some of the immediate details of the trauma so they are no longer stored there.
These details can include the pain, sounds, smells, feelings, etc.
The memory of the event (s) remains, but the details (causing present day problems such as nightmares, hypersensitivity, etc) release.
The second theory is that EMDR works like REM sleep to shift our orientation response from episodic to semantic memory in our brain.
If you feel overwhelmed by life and have trouble coping with the challenges and disruptions of the pandemic, you may be a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP).
Being "sensitive" can be a curse, it can also be a gift!
You may be among the 15-20% of the population who are highly sensitive (an HSP).
If so, know that your trait is normal, innate.
In fact, biologists have found it to be in most or all animals, from fruit flies and fish to dogs, cats, horses, and primates.
High sensitivity is a survival strategy, being observant before acting.
The body doesn't lie; it holds the key to unlocking the subconscious.
Most people can feel resonance in the sensation of energy flowing through their own body.
A positive resonance, connection or rapport, usually creates expansion and relaxation.
A negative resonance, or dissonance, usually leads to subconscious guarding, holding, or tension.
All movements - body language, gestures, and innate unconscious responses to another person- are a combination of positive and negative energy or resonance.
If you experienced a traumatic event and unwanted memories and feelings intrude in your life, you may have PTSD and need professional counseling.
EMDR therapy and Somatic therapy can help you cope with anxiety and depression.

Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a terrifying event such as a serious accident, or physical or sexual assault in adult or childhood.
Symptoms vary and may include distressing dreams or flashbacks of the event.
