Hypnotherapy is a focused trance state which the client controls. Yes, the client controls the depth and the material that is accessed in the unconscious mind. Hypnotherapy is powerful at quieting the judgmental, conscious, thought based mind and allowing a person to access the unconscious, emotional based, mind's wisdom, experience, auto pilot programming, your imagination and the portal to intuition.
It is estimated that 97% of the public can be hypnotized. The other 3% are those with such high control needs that they would never allow a licensed professional to guide them to their answers they hold in the unconscious mind. I am trained in many forms of psychotherapy and am a certified clinical hypnotherapist (CHT). Many clients come to me for just psychotherapy (also known as "talk therapy" or "counseling").

Each of the 8 certifying national organizations for certified clinical hypnotherapists require their hypnotherapists to sign a Code of Ethics to certify and recertify.
These ethics speak to not taking a client into so deep a focused trance that their conscious mind (the discerning, thought based mind) has been sent completely away leaving the very literal unconscious mind open and vulnerable to the hypnotherapist's suggestions.

It's like the flu, once you've caught it, you've caught it.
Once you have it, it's your problem and the responsibility of curing it is yours.
Once you're aware of it, you already start to release the stranglehold it can have on a person in enmeshed relationships.
Ideally, each person finds their own recovery or healing process and can begin practicing the new way of thinking and acting in relationships.
