Services
During the genetic counseling process, a detailed medical and family history will be taken to provide a personalized assessment of your risk factors.
Once a risk assessment is performed, it will be determine whether you are a candidate for genetic testing.
If you are, a discussion will ensue of the risks, benefits and limitations of genetic testing as well as a review of your insurance company's coverage criteria.
We will assist with insurance authorization for genetic testing, if needed.
Importantly, not everyone who comes in for a genetic consultation will be a candidate for genetic testing.
Genetics has been working its way into mainstream medicine over the past few years.
This is evidenced by an increasing number of articles covering genetics in prestigious medical journals like the New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA, the inclusion of BRCA genetic testing in the Affordable Care Act and President Obama's Precision Medicine Initiative.
Additionally, more genetic testing companies have emerged and some are advertising to patients directly, so called direct-to-consumer genetic testing.
While we can help coordinate genetic testing for many different conditions, we think understanding the impact of a diagnosis of a hereditary neurologic condition can have on an individual and family is paramount.
There are many issues unique to genetic counseling and testing for neurogenetic conditions that should be discussed prior to testing such as treatment (or sometimes lack of treatment), family planning, how to handle life and long-term care insurance and disability care, and getting involved with research.
Like many conditions, there are hereditary diseases that can impact vision and cause blindness.
Many of the hereditary ocular conditions are rare in the general population and involve an optometrist or ophthalmologist to make the diagnosis.
Genetic testing can aid an eye doctor in determining the cause of an individual's vision issues or blindness.
Making the correct diagnosis can help your physician determine if there are any other health issues that may arise aside from vision problems and whether there are any specific treatments that need to be considered.
Pharmacogenomics is the study of how genes affect a person's response to drugs.
The relatively new field combines pharmacology (the study of drugs) and genomics (the study of genes and their function) to develop effective, safe medications and dosing that will be tailored to a person's genetic make-up.
The concept of pharmacogenomics crosses many medical specialties including hematology, oncology, psychiatry and primary care to name a few.
However, since this is a newer field, the application of pharmacogenomics can only be applied to select medications.
