Sue Mayo, MFT
I am a California and Idaho licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and I have been working with clients in my Lafayette practice since 1997. In 2021, I added the Treasure Valley (Meridian, Idaho) to my service area. Currently, all services occur via tele-health. In addition to my private therapy practice, I have over sixteen years of experience working for Superior Court of California, Contra Costa County, as a Family Court Mediator.

I work with a wide variety of clients and adjust my style to suit each client's needs and issues. My theoretical orientation is both psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral. When working with children and families, I also employ family systems theory. My work with clients has encompassed the following: depression, anxiety, family changes (divorce, remarriage), child behavior issues, parenting, grief and loss, life transitions, couples communication, gay/lesbian issues, trauma, and much more.

I invite you to peruse my website and to contact me by phone or email to see if I might be the right therapist for you.
Services
If you have never been in therapy, the process may seem daunting or even scary.
Sometimes it takes a lot of courage to make the phone call or send the email to begin the experience.
There is nothing mysterious or magical about psychotherapy.
People enter therapy for a variety of reasons, but usually it stems from something not seeming right or the feeling that something is missing in their lives.
Therapy is a safe space where you can honestly explore yourself, your choices and your relationships.
Relationships can be challenging, and couples often need help navigating difficulties.
I work with couples on improving their relationship, whether they are dealing with communication issues or more complicated dynamics such as infidelity.
Couples therapy focuses on the current difficulties that partners are experiencing, as well as the ways in which couples are caring for or nurturing one another.
There is also an emphasis on what each partner learned about relationships from their family-of-origin and previous relationship experiences, and how this might impact their current relationship.
Adults enter therapy for a variety of reasons.
There are many different theoretical orientations within the field of psychology, and I adjust my lens to each client's presenting issue and goals.
Sometimes, therapy can be short-term and brief.
Therapy might focus on a single issue, such as working through grief and loss or learning specific tools to manage stress, depression or anxiety.
Often, this type of therapy involves working from a cognitive-behavioral or solution-focused perspective.
Sometimes adults initiate therapy to address deeper problems or some part of their life where they are feeling stuck.
Aside from my work as a private practice therapist, I have over 16 years of experience with Superior Court of California, Contra Costa County, as a Family Court Mediator.
I bring this expertise into my private practice by offering specialized services within the framework of family law.
These services are very similar in nature.
The difference is that private mediation results in the creation of actual custody documents, which can be turned into court orders.
Co-Parenting Counseling is designed to assist parents who already have court orders but are struggling to learn how to cooperate with each other and make good decisions on behalf of their children.
I am an in-network provider for the following insurance: Anthem Blue Cross, Anthem Blue Cross Medi-Cal, Aetna, and Healthnet / Managed Health Network (MHN).
For clients with the above insurance plans, I will bill your insurance directly.
You may be responsible for a co-pay for each office visit.
Services may be covered in full or in part by your health insurance.
Does my insurance cover only "medically necessary treatment", or does it include treatment for general life struggles?
Do I need an "Axis 1 diagnosis" in order for therapy to be covered?.
