In my metropolitan Washington, DC practice as a trauma counselor, I deal with a variety of people and psychological issues. But the heart of my practice is working with the after-effects of Trauma (overwhelm), including PTSD, dissociative disorders, mood disorders, anxiety and more. I work with individuals and couples who have survived traumatic life experiences.

A traumatic life experience can leave you with complex emotional issues to deal with. Not all these carry the official label, PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). But they all hurt and can hold you back from living your life to the fullest. But the crazy and counter-intuitive thing is: the more you try to avoid your painful and troubling feelings, the more powerful and influential they become.

Just the act of avoiding them robs you of the energy and vitality you need to deal with them. Trauma counseling can help. You don't have to go it alone. As a therapist who deals with psychological trauma, I will help you learn how to treat your feelings in a nonjudgmental and compassionate manner.

My name is Adrian Connolly and I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor in the Dupont Circle area of Washington, DC.
My specialty is working with the aftermath of traumatic life experiences.
I have worked extensively with clients whose traumatic or painful life experiences-either recent or past-continue to reverberate in their current emotional and physical difficulties.
My clients discover that processing their painful traumatic experiences helps them feel stronger, and feel more alive and able to engage in the positive aspects of life.
The heart of my trauma counseling practice is helping individuals, couples and groups understand the nature of trauma- the root of your traumatic wound and how that is playing out in your life-emotionally, physically and spiritually.
With attention, understanding, acceptance and changes in thought and behavior patterns, healing and recovery is not only possible, but can leave you in a more resilient state.
Situations that confront you with great inner pain can set off a process of enormous positive inner growth and healing.
DBT is helpful for those who struggle to manage their emotions (e.g., rapid mood changes, intense and debilitating emotions, etc.).
The overarching goal is to obtain "a life worth living" by learning to tolerate distress and improve relationships.
Through DBT you will learn an array of skills to manage your emotions and the impulsive and almost automatic behaviors that often accompany strong emotions.
DBT has been shown to be effective in reducing suicidal behaviors, hospitalizations, and problems with anger, depression, and hopelessness.
Cognitive Emotional Behavioral Therapy (CEBT) can help you understand the experience and expression of your emotions.
Then you can identify and challenge your beliefs and attend and respond to your emotions adaptively.

Training in Mindfulness can help you manage prolonged periods of stress before they create havoc with your mental and physical health.
The aim of mindfulness training is to offer you greater clarity on what is happening in the here and now so you can recognize stress triggers and deal with them in a productive manner.
