The driving force behind the IvyMaven mission is my particular mix of education, experience, and personal history. I'm a first-generation college graduate who attended city, state, and private universities. I earned a Ph. D. in Clinical Psychology from Syracuse University, counseled undergraduates, and also trained as an individual and family therapist and researcher.
For several years I worked as a Child and Adolescent Development Specialist for Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. I led a team of professionals, providing educational consulting to parents and schools. Typically this included in-depth assessment of individual learning styles, strengths and weaknesses, academic achievement, and more. Students (age 6-16) ranged from those with learning differences to the highly gifted, and at times "twice exceptional."
I found I made my most creative recommendations when consulting on the educational needs of gifted adolescents, where the resources seemed most limited but the potential gains to student and society most promising.

The college admissions process need not be overwhelming.
With individualized support and guidance it can be manageable, and even an exciting journey.
My purpose is to streamline this process, to make it more directed, to give realistic feedback, and to encourage you to identify and pursue your own college dreams.
The college planning process involves searching yourself for your essence.
It also requires pinpointing the particular colleges and universities whose culture, resources and mission fit you best in the ways you value most.

Wherever you are when we start, I aim to apply my knowledge to your personal college admissions goals creatively and holistically.
My approach is creative because I can get you thinking in ways you've perhaps not yet considered.
It is holistic because I have expertise in the complex array of factors that impact selective college admissions, and this invites us to collaborate on a multi-layered admissions campaign.
My counsel can have the greatest impact if you contact me early in the high school years.

In counseling students on their path to college, outcome, of course, matters: where a student gets admitted, where they attend.
But equally important is the process to reach that outcome.
The college application process can be isolating because the most efficient, effective way to go about it is to keep on going down your critical path while ignoring the other candidates and the noise they are making.
That's why it's great for students to have a counselor focused only on them!
At IvyMaven, I make it my business to stay fully informed on the colleges with constant research and conversations with colleagues and admissions personnel and more.

We wanted to thank you for the exceptional support and guidance you've provided to "J." in his college application process.
He thinks the world of you and we couldn't be happier.
We worked with IvyMaven for each of our three kids.
Helane provide phenomenal advice -- honest and spot-on -- in terms of identifying schools that would be good fits for our kids and their likelihood of getting in, and in writing essays.
Helane knows the applications inside and out -- what the colleges are really asking in the essays, and what a proper tone is, for example, on the main Common App essay.
