Joan Druckman, PhD
As an experienced therapist, psychologist, and marriage counselor, I have treated varied and sometimes difficult problems faced by individuals, couples, and families. A careful assessment is made at the beginning of therapy, and together, we develop an individualized and specific plan that combines direction, compassion, and a belief in our ability to make positive changes.

Sometimes therapy goals involve acceptance; sometimes they involve change. We always strive for greater understanding of self and others. Each session, guided by specific therapy goals, is interactive, collaborative, and respectful. I have practiced psychotherapy and couples counseling for over 25 years in the Sacramento area and have seen the fields of applied psychology, marriage counseling, premarital counseling, and couples counseling change and grow.

We continue to develop and deepen our understanding of personal and interpersonal strengths, resilience, motivation, and coping. There is much we can do to have a better relationship with ourselves and with others.
Services
I provide psychotherapy and counseling to adult individuals and couples.
Many seek help for problems such as depression, anxiety, panic, and worry.
A significant number of people struggle with marriage and family difficulties.
Many people seek counseling when they are having difficulty adjusting to a life change.
The transition to marriage, parenthood, divorce, a child leaving the family home, disability, and end of life provide challenges to us all, and counseling can help individuals and couples find a way to positively cope through these difficult times.
For my doctoral dissertation, I studied conflict patterns in premarital couples and helped develop a test to facilitate premarriage counseling and education programs called PREPARE-ENRICH.
After completing my doctoral degree, I worked as an associate research scientist at the American Institutes of Research in Palo Alto, California, studying the effectiveness of counseling interventions for children in families of divorce and remarriage.
I also taught graduate students at the California School of Family Psychology in San Rafael, CA, and supervised many students in their doctoral research.
I often recommend the books below to deepen understanding of the problem you are dealing with.
Below is a list of the books that I am currently recommending, and perhaps you will find them useful too.
