The Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling is an organization of counseling professionals dedicated to serving students as they explore options and make choices about pursuing postsecondary education. IACAC members are counselors, admission or financial aid officers, active retirees, or students who are concerned about the future of education in the State of Illinois and in the nation.
IACAC is committed to maintaining high standards which foster ethical and social responsibility among those involved in the transition process. IACAC is a chartered affiliate of the National Association for College Admission Counseling.

A conference of 13 midwestern college admission "field workers" met on that date to discuss ethical issues in the profession.
Later that year, 18 midwestern colleges established the Association of College Representatives, which became ACAC in 1939.
1955 Secondary school members added to the organization - with two of the first three National Board members being from Illinois.
1986 Name changed to parallel NACAC (dropped "s" in Admissions); first membership brochure produced; mentorship program established; independent counselors eligible for voting membership; Professional Education Director position added to the Board.

The Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling's Recognition Award was inaugurated in 1974, to recognize long and meritorius service to our profession, the rendering of service to our association, the demonstration of leadership and, finally, service with distinction.
In 1997, the IACAC Executive Board renamed the award in memory of Patricia A. Kasowski.
The Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling's Newcomer Recognition Award was inaugurated in 1987, to recognize significant contributions of those members with fewer than five years' involvement with IACAC.

The purposes for which this corporation is organized are: exclusively educational to promote the highest professional standards in guidance and to maintain maximum communication of best practices pertaining to postsecondary admissions at primary, secondary, and postsecondary levels empowering members to serve the interests of students, parents and primary, secondary, and postsecondary institutions.
These best practices are maintained and promoted through the Guide to Ethical Practice in College Admission (GEPCA) of the National Association for College Admission Counseling.

With many programs, events and ways to support students, it became apparent that this information should be passed down and kept for historical purposes, but also to help future leaders within the organization.
Many state and regional affiliates have a leadership or policy manual, which provides more details to the various committees, events, and programs they offer.
This document will provide IACAC more flexibility to be more specific with committees and their events, so as not to overwhelm the by-laws currently in place.

Membership in the Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling is a privilege made available to eligible institutions and individuals as defined in the association's By-Laws and criteria established by the Executive Board.
Voting members are encouraged to identify their school, college, or agency/organization as an IACAC member.
Principal representatives and individual members at member institutions, independent counselor members, and other voting members are encouraged to identify their IACAC affiliation in resumes or curricula vitae.
