At Alhambra Valley Counseling Center, we believe that each person has an innate ability to reach his or her full potential. The task of psychotherapy is to clarify obstacles and to come to terms with them, by compassionate acceptance and strategic changes. The process of counseling is dynamic and interactive, and at Alhambra Valley Counseling Center, clients are cared for, supported and empowered.

Our professional staff includes five Clinical Psychologists, one Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, and one Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Each therapist at Alhambra Valley Counseling Center sets his or her own office hours and reimbursement rates. Many insurances are accepted. Please see our individual profiles, and give us a call if we may be of assistance to you and/or your family.

All inquiries are confidential, and we strive to return your call within 24 hours. Alhambra Valley Counseling Center (AVCC) has been located in downtown Martinez since 1989. The practice began with the two Steves: Dr. Steven Cloutier and Dr. Steven Shelton believed that the Martinez community, and the greater central Contra Costa County, could benefit from an easily accessed, professional psychotherapy center.
Services
My work includes working with individuals coping with depression, anxiety, addiction, trauma, and chronic and severe mental illness.
I have experience working with all age ranges and ethnicities.
I welcome clients of all gender identities and sexual orientations.
I have ten years plus experience of working within the field of psychology in a variety of settings including drug and alcohol therapy, psychiatric crisis stabilization, forensics, and individual and group therapies.
I came into the field of therapy because I believe people can benefit from having a safe space to explore their minds.
I love to give clients tools that they can use right away in their everyday lives.
In my experience, strictly talk therapy does not always facilitate the outcomes that a more wholistic approach can.
This is particularly true with issues of stress, anxiety, and trauma.
For this reason, I like to integrate other modalities into sessions because I find them effective, streamlined, and inspiring.
These modalities might include Energy Psychology or Embodied Mindfulness.
These practices help calm the nervous system, rewire brain pathways, and support clients in becoming more resilient and adaptive when life presents inevitable stressors.
As a therapist, I guide people to recognize and overcome the thoughts, beliefs and assumptions that undermine their daily lives.
I work with clients who have survived trauma, so they can transcend the past.
I treat those who struggle with anxiety and depression and feel thwarted in their ability to connect with those they love.
As I sit with my clients, we work jointly to create an awareness of who they are, where they wish to be, and how best to achieve their goals.
Together, my clients and I discover, expand, and strategize ways to reconnect with the internal resources and external supports they need.
Our lives affect our relationships and our relationships affect our lives - they are all interconnected.
I'm so happy that you made the first step toward a very courageous decision to reach out for help.
I am here to help.
I use a humanistic, person centered, solution focused approach when working with my clients.
I seek to work collaboratively with you to develop and reach your personal goals.
I offer an empathetic listening ear and provide genuine and honest feedback.
I seek to help you find the root causes of the things you struggle with and then to work through those things.
Thank you for checking out my therapist profile.
My name is Shaunna Murtha.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
If you asked the kids I work with they would tell you I am a "whacky" therapist.
What that means is I do not typically have people come lay on the couch and tell me all their problems like you see in the movies.
My belief is therapy is much more dynamic and a partnership between the therapist and the person(s) seeking therapy.
As we are whole human beings, my approach to therapy is holistic.
