Depression and anxiety are often caused by factors outside of our awareness, under the surface of our inner ocean. Her narcissistic mother treated her as though she was an extension of herself and related to Susan based on how well she served the mother's own needs. Susan's own needs, if expressed, would result in rejection or risk to her relationship with her mother.

In therapy, she worked to eliminate this underlying belief and started to live a more enjoyable life, prioritizing her own needs in her relationships. They seek out therapy in hope (often beneath the surface of awareness) of becoming free from the constraining effects of their painful past. Therapy is ideal for you if you're committed to mastering the unconscious obstacles standing between you and your biggest goals.

The main danger individuals face as children is the disruption of their relationship with their parents. Therefore, we develop basic beliefs about ourselves and the world that are designed to keep our relationship with our parents intact.

So much learned during childhood to cope with family dynamics, school, etc. create a force preventing the adult from thriving.
The very beliefs that helped sustain equilibrium in childhood become self-limiting and constricting.
These are at the root of adult stress and often operate beneath the surface of your awareness.
Getting relief from depression and anxiety seems out of reach - and blaming oneself is generally underneath these feelings.
Relief?
Where is it?
How can it be found?
Therapy with me can help you understand the source of your suffering and help create the opportunity to live a richer and more fulfilling life.
Each day is a challenge.
Getting out of bed takes all the energy saved up during the night - if there was restful sleep.
Waking up during the night wanting to scream out loud happens frequently.
Just saying, "I need to get a grip" doesn't usually help.
Having a friend or relative say, "Get over it" isn't helpful either.
A few friends are great at listening and providing good advice, but their comments might damage the friendship - and be erroneous as well.
Besides, friends carry their own beliefs into your conversations.
Do you find yourself worrying about anything and everything, fearing that the worst will happen?
Anxiety serves a purpose in people's lives when it is adaptive and helps improve a person's functioning and wellbeing.
Unhealthy chronic anxiety can impair a person's functioning and interfere with their well-being as well as cause significant distress.
Anxiety makes people feel like worrying about the "dreaded thing" will keep it from happening, when the excessive worrying only robs the worrier of peace and tranquility.
Has your heart been shattered into a million pieces, you worry how you will survive the days ahead, or wonder how you will ever find love again?
Many people are thrown into difficult transitions, which require them being able to adapt and change to the new circumstances.
When transitions are causing stress, anxiety, or depression, the help of a trained therapist can help you get to where you need to be.
Just like nature cycles through seasons of change and transformation, we humans transition through psychological and physical states of transformation throughout our lives.
Is your behavior carving a path of destruction in your relationships?
Is your pattern of drug or alcohol use leading to negative consequences (i.e., relationships, job, DUI, etc.)?
I need that hot stick - or Mary Jane - or whatever the most current slang is for a marijuana cigarette.
Who chooses to have their relationships fall apart because of being drunk and losing a job?
And if marijuana has led to cocaine or heroin, there is no way to 'just stop.'
I invite you into my practice to explore the next steps you want to take to find a way back to a better life.
