Orchard Counseling and Education was formed in 2007 to help individuals and couples address concerns about sexuality, intimacy, and relationships through affirming, empowering, strengths-based counseling and psychotherapy. We also strengthen our community through educational programs around these issues for both professional and lay audiences. For some people, the prospect of entering into counseling or psychotherapy can be anxiety provoking.
While psychotherapy is increasingly common, some people are still stuck with the notion that you have to be mentally ill, or have a weak character to "need" therapy. But millions of healthy people who have benefitted from counseling would disagree. In reality, everybody can use some assistance, insight, or guidance sometimes. Just as we all have strengths, we also have "blind spots"unhelpful and unproductive patterns of thinking, behaving, and relating to others that we don't even notice.
At Orchard Counseling, psychotherapy is an affirming, collaborative process that seeks to understand how we got stuck in these patterns, and then use that knowledge to develop new strategies, new options, and constructive solutions to your concerns.

Close intimate relationships can enrich our lives like few other experiences-so it makes sense that few things throw us out of balance more than difficulties in our intimate lives.
Many factors come together to make a successful and vital partnership.
Our approach is to carefully assess the dynamics of the relationship, including the unique set of strengths and challenges that each partner brings.
In doing so, we can develop strategies and solutions that address each partner's concerns-not only to solve the immediate problems that brought you to counseling, but to build a foundation for a rich, healthy, lasting intimate relationship.

When you think about it, sexuality touches almost every part of our lives in some way.
It informs our experiences of who we are (or aren't) as men and women, who and how we love, what constitutes "family", pleasure, intimacy, relationships and many others.
Yet many people find it awkward to talk about sexuality, and that can make it hard to reach out for help when you need it.
In our practice, we specialize in a wide variety of issues around sexuality, using an empowering, non-shaming approach to finding positive and effective solutions to your concerns.

Although we work with a wide variety of concerns around sexuality, we have compiled some of the most common concerns here, simply as a convenience.
Erectile dysfunction (sometimes called "ED" or "impotence") can be enormously frustrating for both partners, and can really do a job on your self-esteem.
But it's also very treatable.
Rapid ejaculation (sometimes called "premature ejaculation") is a common problem.
Like other sexual dysfunctions, the psychological impact can be just as distressing as the physical symptoms.

One of the reasons that people find partners in the first place is for the feelings of intimacy and connectedness that come with sexual interaction.
But this connection between sexuality and intimacy can be tricky.
When sex isn't intimate and satisfying, our relationships can suffer, and when our relationships are aren't working right, our sexual interaction takes a hit in return.
As a result, our relationship can suffer more, then our sex life suffers more, and before you know it, feelings of love, intimacy, and desire all start to feel like a distant memory.

There are no "right" or "wrong" ways to experience sexuality, but when our bodies don't respond the way we expect them to, or when pain interferes, we can feel like an important part of ourselves is broken.
Sex therapy can help to improve sexual functioning.
But it can also help you and your partner find ways to feel connected and to share pleasure while you're working on it.
