What is Depression?
Depression is a serious mental illness; it's not something that you have made up in your head.
It's more than just feeling "down in the dumps" or "blue" for a few days.
It is feeling down and low and hopeless for weeks at a time.
Everyone occasionally feels blue or sad, but these feelings are usually fleeting and pass within a few days.
When a person has a depressive disorder, it interferes with daily life, normal functioning, and causes pain for both the person with the disorder and those who care about him or her.
Typically triggered by an emotional hurt, anger is usually experienced as an unpleasant feeling that occurs when we think we have been injured, mistreated, opposed in our long-held views, or when we are faced with obstacles that keep us from attaining personal goals.
The experience of anger varies widely; how often anger occurs, how intensely it is felt, and how long it lasts are different for each person.
People also vary in how easily they get angry (their anger threshold), as well as how comfortable they are with feeling angry.
This disorder is often characterized by a pattern of continued pathological thinking, behaviors, and/or use of substances to deal with underlying anxiety, depression or stress in one's life.
When we have become dependent on that behavior to the extent it jeopardizes our health, relationships, welfare and/or safety, and we continue to repeat the behavior we have developed an addiction.
All addictions usually start with a positive result but end up becoming a commitment in themselves.
All addictions block positive energy flow in the body.
Tobacco dependence is a chronic condition that often requires repeated intervention.
This intervention, if delivered in a timely and effective manner may significantly reduce the smoker's risk of suffering from smoking related diseases.
Linda Kibrick, MSW, LCSW, LCADC and Bill Rhoads, MSW, LCSW are NJ Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialists.
We can help you assess your concerns about smoking or whether now is the time for you to reduce or end your dependence on nicotine.
There are a number of programs and products available to assist you through this process.
What is Stress?
Stress is a normal physical response to events that make you feel threatened or upset your balance in some way.
When you sense danger, whether it's real or imagined, the body's defenses kick into high gear in a rapid, automatic process known as the "fight or flight" reaction, or the stress response.
Long-term exposure to stress can lead to serious health problems.
Chronic stress disrupts nearly every system in your body.
It can raise blood pressure, suppress the immune system, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, contribute to infertility, and speed up the aging process.
