I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Vancouver, Washington with nearly 30 years of experience working with individuals, couples, families and groups. I specialize in working with individuals and couples wanting help with life's challenges and relationship issues. In my approach, I look at these problems as a part of the natural process of growing up.
It is the facing and growing through these dilemmas that make each of us more capable of the strength and resiliency needed to develop the capacity for the passion and intimacy we seek. I help people see more accurate ways of making sense of their problems, and to take action to make changes.
As a marriage therapist, I assist individuals and couples to improve communication and trust, reduce conflict, resolve sexual concerns, reduce stress, depression and anxiety, increase intimacy, and renew respect, attention and love.I have a life-long passion for learning, with an emphasis on personal and spiritual growth. I strive to create a respectful alliance with my clients and help them to identify their strengths and resources to develop greater emotional connection with their partners and families.

Services
I use a systems-based approach.
When working with relationship issues, I look at the couple as a system.
Each person in the relationship is part of the system affecting the dynamics that get played out; including where the couple gets stuck.
As each individual begins to see how they contribute to a problem, based on their interpretation and reaction to it, they are often able to manage their reactivity to their partner or situation better, which changes the dynamics of the system.
Instead of seeking validation from your partner, I emphasize validating your self and managing your own behavior.

Counseling sessions are by appointment.
Frequency of visits and length of sessions is determined during our initial session.
Clients often find weekly sessions are helpful to get started and can usually extend time between sessions to every other week relatively quickly.
I have found the 2-hour session to be especially valuable in working with couples.
It is an adequate time to get to the heart of some matters, and my clients feel a greater sense of getting somewhere within the two-hour time frame.

Laura, I just wanted to say thank you so much for all the guidance and support you've given me.
I am so thankful that I've been able to learn so much about myself, and you helped so very much in that.
Laura has helped me in two ways.
The first was to help me understand my past and what caused some of my knee-jerk reactions.
Second, once I got through the first part, I was ready to work on my marriage.
She has been gentle, yet comfortably firm.
Laura, I have recently completed my first quarter at college, and did quite well.
