The San Francisco Group for Evidence-Based Psychotherapy was founded in 2005. Its four members were brought together through personal connection, similarity in background, like-mindedness, and common goals. All psychologists within the group were trained in the scientist-practitioner model of clinical psychology, which emphasizes a strong relationship between scientific research and clinical practice.
All group members have backgrounds in teaching, training, and published research.

Sessions are typically 50 minutes in duration and conducted weekly.
Treatments may range from 2-4 months to 2 years or more, depending on the problems and the goals.
We are available for and welcome consultations with colleagues or students in our areas of specialty.

For the last 3-4 decades, psychotherapy has been researched extensively.
Randomized controlled treatment trials (similar to medication studies) have demonstrated the effectiveness of psychotherapy overall, and have identified specific approaches that work especially well for certain problems and diagnoses.
These include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) (see Approach for details).
Research has shown that the client-therapist relationship is essential to effective change and growth, so this is also evidence-based and a fundamental focus.

Before beginning therapy, we conduct a thorough assessment of your goals and values, as well as your history and the current difficulties you are encountering.
This helps us together form a conceptualization or hypothesis about why you are stuck, and a treatment plan as to how we can effectively work together to achieve the client's goals.
Some type of progress monitoring is used, and if the desired changes are not occurring, the conceptualization and plan are revised.
Therapy sessions are typically structured, involve active collaboration, and includes homework (between-session practice of skills, experimenting and developing new behaviors).
