I am an Austin psychologist with many years of experience in treating a variety of conditions including depression, anxiety and relational difficulties. My approach is to treat each person as an individual with unique thoughts, emotions and behaviors. I appreciate that these are interconnected in complex ways. I want to understand your ways of being who you are and to help you explore alternatives that may serve you better.
Another part of my job is to provide you with techniques and strategies for adopting those alternatives that you choose-and to check on your progress, altering strategy as needed. We work together to help you identify specific goals and experiment with strategies to achieve them.

I am an active and engaged therapist.
I will not simply nod and ask you, "How do you feel about that?".
I try to serve as an objective mirror for my clients, giving them feedback on what I perceive.
This is done tentatively and respectfully but with as much confrontation as seems appropriate.
It's not unusual for a client to have a general goal and want help articulating what it means for them.
In our first session I ask, "How can I help you?".
I listen carefully, ask questions and repeat the goal(s) expressed to make sure we have a clear understanding.

Psychotherapy should provide a safe space to solve problems and heal wounds.
It can be a place of hope and new beginnings.
Within a trusting, collaborative relationship with the therapist it can provide structure for you to build your personal resources and to discover solutions.
It can also be a place to continue your personal growth and learn more about yourself.
I am skilled at helping my clients to determine clear goals, but I am flexible in providing space for more open exploration when that is desired.

I like to meet initially with both parties together to get an understanding of the problems and emotions involved.
If both of you want to continue working with me (which you can discuss away from the office and call to let me know), I will next meet with each of you individually and return to joint meetings on the fourth session.
I have structured homework exercises, readings which we will discuss, brief take-home questionnaires, and I will create opportunities for me to observe your interactions and provide feedback.

Depressive disorders can involve long-term feelings of sadness, emptiness, loss of hope, irritability/anger and the inability to get things done.
They can include the experience of no pleasure from life, weight gain or loss, trouble with sleep, tiredness, slowing down, difficulty concentrating, excessive guilt, poor self-esteem and even thoughts of suicide.
These kinds of emotions can also come on quickly in response to known circumstances or without an apparent reason.
Although it may feel similar, normal grieving is not depression.
