Services
Counseling may sound scary, especially if you have not been in counseling before or if you had a negative experience with a counselor in the past.
Here is some information about the counseling process that may help you to get a sense of what to expect and decide whether or not you are ready to seek help.
Initial appointment (Intake): First session (also called intake session) is scheduled to gather information about your, your child's, or your family's struggles and needs.
During this session, you will also receive information about my therapy approach and get answers to any questions you may have.
Play has been used in child therapy since early 1900s to help children better express themselves.
Children are provided with carefully selected toys and activities to gain a better understanding of the issues they experience and to help them resolve these problems using their own language: play.
Children under the age of 12 do not have a fully developed cognitive ability to effectively express themselves through verbal communication.
Play is the natural language of children and one of the best ways to understand their feelings, thoughts, and experiences.
Many pre-teens and teens feel misunderstood by adults and they are likely to assume that therapists won't understand them either.
They may also feel nervous about seeing a therapist, thinking that they will be questionned and criticized about how they live their lives.
So, it is very important for therapists to know how to work with pre-teens and teens to help them feel understood and safe.
I help pre-teens and teens to feel safe in session, open up about their issues, gain self-awareness, learn better coping skills, and figure out ways to express negative emotions in socially acceptable ways.
Being a parent is one of the most rewarding but also challenging roles in life.
It is very common for parents not to know the best methods to discipline their children without getting in power struggles or instilling fear.
Especially for children who show oppositional behaviors and have a strong need to "be in charge, " parents need to learn how to be firm and consistent with their discipline methods without damaging their relationships with their children.
It is not uncommon for parents to verbalize their concerns about not having a close and meaningful relationship with their children.
The first session (also called intake session) will be focused on gathering information about your reasons to seek counseling for yourself or your child.
I will also give you more information about my therapy approach and answer any questions that you may have about counseling.
Intake sessions take between 75 and 90 minutes.
You will need to fill out some paperwork before we start, so please make sure to come in 15 minutes before your session.
If your child is in therapy, I will meet with you during the first or last 10-15 minutes of the session to follow up on your child's progress and help you to deal with behavioral problems.
