I have over 25 years of experience in psychotherapy and consultation in a variety of contexts. I invite you to explore the pages on my adult, child, teen, family, school, and consultation work that are most important to you, to learn about my approach in each of these areas and the specific issues I can help with. Of course there are unique aspects to each area of my work, but they have always been unified for me.
Put most simply, I find that people heal and change in an atmosphere of compassion, trust, and understanding. With this in mind, I spend considerable energy developing a strong relationship with each patient, and I strive to create an environment of respect and empathy, tempered by offering a fresh perspective on situations that seem stuck.
I was Program Director of the Ross Hospital Child and Adolescent Inpatient Unit, and I have consulted to many schools including Redwood High School, San Domenico, Marin Primary and Middle School, and Marin Country Day School.I have supervised psychology trainees at The Wright Institute and at the Apple Family Center, and I led a child consultation group for A Home Within, an organization that provides free psychotherapy to children in foster care.

Psychotherapy is often a last resort when other attempts at change have failed.
When we meet, I try hard to understand the ways in which you have become stuck so that I can help you find a way out of your unhappiness.
I create a warm, supportive, non-judgmental atmosphere, and I aim to balance supportive empathy with a fresh perspective on ways to enable positive change.
I listen carefully, and strive to help you understand aspects of yourself that you may be unaware of.
My experience shows me over and over that when you are able to open up safely, real transformation becomes possible.

Often it is hard for children to communicate with adults about what is causing them distress, and sometimes this knowledge is outside a child's awareness.
So problems tend to show through behavior, causing the troubles that lead you to seek help.
Fortunately, children's distress reliably shows up symbolically in their play, as well as problematically in their behavior.
Using play therapy with your child, I can help you figure out what is troubling your child, and design interventions to help reduce their suffering.

I love the energy and creativity of adolescence.
It can be a time for growth and exploration, when anything seems possible.
However, adolescence can also be a time of conflict, pain, loneliness, or destructiveness.
If you are a parent concerned about your teen, or a teen feeling overwhelmed yourself, therapy can make a profound difference.
I take a warm, non-judgmental stance with teenagers, and I work hard to create a strong relationship.
Often I refrain from giving advice or taking a parental stance, as teenagers already have those figures in their lives.

Schools are a kind of second home to children and families, so of course conflict and behavior problems can present themselves in the school context.
I have expertise in consulting with school administrators, teachers, and counselors on how to approach such issues.
Often described as "multi-problem" families, the families in question are typically struggling with multiple stressors, may have several children with learning and emotional needs, and have difficulty obtaining or following through with effective treatment.

It is all too easy easy to get isolated in private practice and find yourself in need of perspective on a particularly challenging case.
