Experiencing an unhappy or irritable mood most of the day every day is a sign you are depressed.
If you have suffered a loss recently, depression can be a normal reaction.
If not, that depressed mood can be part of depressive symptomatology.
Other symptoms of depression include loss of pleasure in things you used to enjoy, loss of or increase in appetite, change in sleep habits (sleeping too much or too little), loss of energy, difficulty concentrating, agitation, restlessness, feelings of worthlessness, guilt or preoccupation with suicide.
Anxiety is a normal human emotion everyone experiences at times.
People feel anxious or nervous when faced with a personal problem or during public speaking for example.
Anxiety disorders, on the other hand, interfere with a person's ability to lead their daily life.
There are many types including panic disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety, specific phobias and generalized anxiety disorder.
Symptoms include panic and fear, obsessive thoughts, flashbacks or nightmares, dry mouth, problems sleeping, heart palpitations, sweating, shortness of breath, numbness or tingling in hands or feet, nausea, and muscle tension.
Most relationships are not perfect and require a lot of time, patience, and understanding to properly function.
Many couples seek help because there was a breach of confidence or a break in the relationship of some sort and the couple can no longer work on things on their own.
We offer couples help in the area of improving the communication process.
Also, many couples at some point meet obstacles concerning their sex life.
Sex is an important part of a relationship.
We help couples work on some of the more common problems.
Grief is an emotional reaction to significant loss, whether you lose a loved one, a pet, a job, move or end a marriage.
Infertility or the loss of a pregnancy can also cause grief.
Grieving is the process of emotional and life adjustment after a loss.
Another term used for grief after the death of a loved one is bereavement.
Every person experiences grief differently and there is no such thing as normal grief.
All of these are part of the grief process, but a person can become overly depressed or anxious after a loss as well.
The most commonly heard concern in this area is why it takes women and couples so long to "get over" a pregnancy loss or difficulty conceiving.
Family and friends may ask that question or the person experiencing the difficulty may ask themselves the same question.
Infertility is as devastating to couples as other losses.
People go through the same grieving process as when they lose a loved one.
Working with a therapist will help you with coping strategies to understand your grieving and work as a team with your partner, stop blaming yourselves and set appropriate limits.
