Looking for assistance from an outside professional can sometimes be overwhelming and a little bit uncomfortable so I want to affirm you on your decision to work on becoming your best self. I'd like to take a moment to introduce myself and I invite you to browse my website to learn more. In addition, I am a certified wellness coach, relationship and parenting coach.

I am also certified in Simplified Emotion Freedom Technique (EFT-Tapping) and have been trained in yoga for social and emotional learning. While I have been trained as a divorce mediator, I only use that training within my role as a psychologist to help clients who are divorcing. I have also received training with the Collaborative Divorce Alliance to participate as part of a collaborative divorce team.

Here is what I believe: everyone has innately within themselves the ability to be their very best self, and to bring that best self into their relationships of all kinds (personal, work, parenting, romantic, spiritual), to reach their highest potential.
Services
Dr. Sonja Benson is a psychologist specializing in couples and family therapy, and maintains a private practice in Wayzata, MN.
She is trained in numerous assessments and interventions including Gottman method therapy, Discernment Counseling, PREPARE-ENRICH, and a variety of career and personality instruments.
With over 20 years experience as a marriage and family therapist, she is currently a private practitioner working with a broad spectrum of clients.
Among her areas of expertise are couples, families, clinical hypnosis, EMDR, career counseling, coaching and consultation.
Couples counseling is a very specialized area of treatment.
Before you begin couples counseling, make sure your provider has been well trained as a specialist and has experience working with couples.
Generally, specialized providers will have graduate level coursework and supervised clinical experience in working with couples before beginning to practice independently.
There are many approaches to working with couples; ask your potential provider how he or she works to make sure it fits with your needs and values.
Please note that Dr. Benson works part time.
She works only one evening a week and no weekends.
She will do her best to accommodate your appointment request.
Please make sure to give enough information about what assistance you are seeking in your message below for her to determine how to best help you.
If you do not get a reply to your request within 48 hours, please either send another request or contact Dr. Benson by phone.
Sometimes email does not get through.
First, recent research shows that even after entering the legal process for divorce, approximately 30% of individual parents with minor children have hopes for their marriage and interest in help with reconciling.
Additionally, about 30% of couples coming into therapy are what we call "mixed agenda" couples where one person is leaning out of the marriage and one person wants to save it.
At the time of filing for divorce, most couples are split on wanting the divorce.
So, before even deciding you might want to divorce, let me recommend Discernment Counseling to determine if you can get both partners on the same page with regard to either an all-out attempt at reconciliation or a divorce.
Do you occasionally wonder if you can get everything you need from a group or don't feel comfortable talking about your "stuff" in front of other couples?
Do you want to work more in depth on something in your relationship or in your parenting or in your life in general?
If you answered yes to any of these questions and you are ready to make the investment in YOU to finally get to where you want to be in life, individual coaching is for you.
Individual coaching is not for someone who isn't willing to put in the time to create the life he or she says is wanted.
