Sarosh Cooper, PhD was born in Union City, NJ and raised in Northern New Jersey. From a young age, he was keenly aware of the emotional difficulties and hurt people were going through. He graduated with his B.A. from George Washington University with a major in psychology. He spent the next year traveling throughout Africa, Asia, and South America before settling in San Francisco to pursue his doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology.
There he immersed himself in working with children, adolescents, and families from the inner cities of Oakland and Richmond, CA. He worked passionately with young people and families most in need. Then, in 2006, he relocated back to the New York Metropolitan Area, and spent the next 10 years at Rutger's University (formerly UMDNJ), as the lead clinician/assistant clinical director of the Adolescent Therapeutic Day School where he served hundreds of children, teenagers and their families.
In 2013, Dr. Cooper established a part-time private practice in Jersey City, NJ.

A very dear teacher, Prof. Gedon Medini, once told a story of Duke Ellington who in a TV interview with him late in his life was asked what he would like to say about the influences and events that shape his starry life.
Our meeting changed the trajectory of our professional life in such meaningful ways leading to the creation of Footprint.
I first met Dr. Sarosh Cooper in 2005, when I was the lead psychotherapist at the Adolescent Therapeutic Day School, UMDNJ (later Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care).

With good reason parents often feel some level of nervousness about raising a teenager, especially when issues of friends, peer pressure, social media/technology, and "hormones" are in the air.
The "nervousness" is replaced with outright anxiety, fear and deep concern when family, friends or school personnel notice new troublesome moods and behaviors.
These can include: social isolation, sadness, decline in academic performance, anger outbursts, anxiety and panic, loss of interest, and possibly forms of bodily harm.

Life at an advanced age can be creative, peaceful, filled with new relationships, and an opportunity do things you didn't have time for in the past.
At the same time, seniors are confronted with physical problems, changing relationships with children, loneliness, losses, and increased difficulties and decisions related to their partners and job/profession.
At Footprint, we have a deep respect for and belief that seniors can continue to experience a full, joyful, and satisfying life.
Seniors have the right to make choices about the direction of their life and how they want to live it, and we are here to provide help and emotional support.

I will take this opportunity to make some observations on art and emotional health and why therapy, therapeutic, and art are interconnected.
Art, in its many forms, has the potential of healing for the observer, the participant and the artist.
Creativity is embedded in every aspect of our life, be it at work, at home, with our children, with our loved ones or in our studio with our loved objects.
We need to express ourselves in a real way with others and with ourselves.
An experience, artistic or else, would be healing so long as we are honest and not scared expressing our real feelings and thoughts.
